hi how are u,,

Fantastic post, some great information for newbies to the DSLR (myself included) as I recently bought a D40 and have been using it auto modes alot, but I want to start getting more advanced in photography, I picked the D40 because it’s excellent for beginners and I definitely needed to start right at the beginning. Anyway, again, great post.

Great article Michael! Just wondering on your thoughts towards this photography course http://www.thephotographyinstitue.ca (warning! it will resize your browser window) - and whether you think it'd be worth the 999$ for the beginner - and if not what you would suggest - I understand your whole Google University approach, but I'm looking for something a little more concrete (and something that will allow my job to be more flexible for my interest in photography). Thanks!

Very nice article. I've been shooting for years on a DSLR and this still helped me out! Perfect explanation of the relation between Shutter Speed, Aperture, and ISO.

Thanks for the article! I'm purchasing my first DSLR in 12 days, so I'm trying to read up as much as I can. I can't say this is the most helpful article I've found, but that's simply because it's the first I've read! =-P

Thanks again for writing this. It was very helpful.

Great article, and very true about the camera. I have just a regular point and shoot, and I'd like to think that my photos are a lot better than just "point and shoot" photos. If I had a larger camera, I would perhaps be able to have more control over my photos (lack of manual focus is the thing I hate about my current camera, I have to trick it.) but I wouldn't get as many photos, because I wouldn't take it nearly as many places.

I really like the extremely narrow DOF I can get with the 50mm/f1.8, which looks nice for closeups of flowers.

Last weekend I got some amazing martial arts shots with my 18-55mm using continuous shooting at shutter speeds as fast as 1/1000 second. I find that I still use the 18-55mm more than the 55-200mm, since it can focus much closer. I almost wish I got the 18-200 instead so I wouldn't have to carry both lenses.

That f/1.8 50mm prime lens was godly. I'm serious. However, Canon offers a lens (which I believe is new) that has 50mm prime with f/1.2. That's crazy.

MIchael Perlman: Most likely, the exposure button on your camera refers to exposure compensation. In other words, your camera allows you to control the ISO, but not the shutter speed and aperture. Those are controlled automatically.

Your camera will always attempt to expose the shot properly. If a picture comes out too dark or too bright, you can adjust the exposure comp to tell the camera to purposely over or under expose the image to make it look right.

Very strightforward article, Michael. Very simple explanation of how shutter speed and aperture work together.

Right now, I'm shooting with an all-too-basic Canon PowerShot A400. It's a cheap and simple point-and-shoot, but it gets the job done in most cases. One of the shooting options on this camera is exposure, which is at 0 by default. What would increasing this value accomplish? (There is a seperate setting for the ISO speed.)

Jonathan: Well, it depends what other lens you will be using. The kit 18-55mm lens goes well with a 50mm f/1.8 for example. But if you intend to do what I did and buy an 18-200mm lens that replaces the 18-55mm, and you have the money right away, no need to buy the kit lens.

Look through Nikon or Canon's selection of lenses, and plan out your upgrade path. I'm looking for my kit to include in the future the 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6, a 50mm prime, and a 12-24mm wide-angle.

Thanks Michael!

There are some really useful tips in that blog post, I think I need to stop debating over what camera and just buy one.

I would be interested in hearing whether you think it is worth getting a kit lens or buying some other lens with the body.
