James: to be fair, I think he was referring to the size.

But James is right. The auto mode on the D90 looks only marginally better than that of the D40/D40x. You have to know what you're doing to use this camera, or the buttons will get in the way.

@Mike Perlman - i know, i own a D80. The D40 is not a "miniature" - it's fully functioning. It's not about the size, it's how you use it.

I finally just put together a review for the D90 on my blog. It really is one of the best cameras I've used at it's price point.

@James Bayliss: The Nikon D40/D40x/D60 camera bodies are like miniature SLRs, which is how my friend described my D40 in comparison to his D50.

Notice how Michael's fingers are just barely slanted on the D90 (not withstanding the extra battery grip), whereas on his old D40x, his fingers were curled up around the grip (see this Flickr photo for an example).

Auto focus with the 50mm is one of my favorite things about upgrading from a D40x to a D90 (not to mention the fantastic high ISO performance, video, more focus points, and better controls).

I guess that means no more manual-focus w/the 50mm...
