I totally agree with what you say about personal blogs - for example, I started writing to learn how to do it. I wrote about what moved me, mostly things that no one else would give a flying fudge about. But that's what got me into blogging: I wanted to keep practicing my writing, but at the same time wanted feedback from other readers. I probably have wasted a lot of my readers' time with my articles, but at least they had a chance to tell me that.
Just by the way, I read a boatload of blogs and yours is the one I write the most comments on. I like the stuff you write about because it often concerns me, too. But yeah, you could make your posts a tad shorter ;)

I think it's the difference between a newspapers and columns. A newspaper simply reports the news, and they are really good at just that. We have sites like Engadget and Gizmodo and TUAW for the news.

But then there's a column. Or an editorial. You read someone's column not because of a specific topic, but because you value their opinion. And it is these editorials that I call blogs. Everything else is simply a website with an RSS feed.

And as confirmation that a single-author blog can make it to the top, look at Daring Fireball, the new 43 Folders, and Seth Godin's blog.

Making your voice heard is what blogs are all about, but they have become either teenagerized or corporatized, with nothing to fill the gap. And that just makes the people producing the content in the middle all the more valuable.

All your points are true, I think, for a personal blog. Where you can write anything you want, as long as you want, for yourself.

On my personal blog I do write for myself primarily, but also for others in the hope that just one thing I say might change the way people think.

I read blogs for a different point of view - my blog is to show mine. It's all very well saying that you write for yourself. But simply due to the medium that you've chosen to convey those thoughts shows that you're in it for more than yourself.

For just about anything other than what can be defined as a "personal blog". I do prefer shorter posts (yes, we've talked about this before :-) ) because half the time when they could be telling you facts - they're rambling.

Just my two cents.

Thank you for posting this. While there are a few points I disagree with, it's nice to hear someone take a stance for once.

Interesting how fate works. The very day I decided that I will only produce content, I find your blog. If you keep writing like this, I'll read it.
