Exactly one year ago, I opened a Twitter account and began tweeting. Back then, it was anything but popular. It was weird to type 140 characters about what you were doing into a webpage for the world to see. Fast forward a year later, and now Twitter is my favourite Internet social network. With 11,000 tweets, 240 friends, and 433 followers, my Twitter stream has really become a community.
When I have a question, I just type up a tweet. When I need someone to interview for school, I just tweet. It has come to the point where I feel disconnected from what other people are doing if I don’t have Twitterrific open. I can’t really put my finger on the appeal of it, but having a community of people all over the world is a really amazing thing.
While Twitter isn’t perfect, having lots of downtime, and bugs, I wouldn’t trade it for any other service. This year, we have seen the rise and fall of many other similar sites. Jaiku. Pownce. While they may have had more features and been more reliable, they didn’t have the same appeal as Twitter. Everyone is on Twitter. It is the single best way to stay in touch with people, meet old friends, and expand your online network.
Twitter has grown in ways that no one could have ever expected. Just today, Twitter has announced a partnership with Google to have Super Tuesday tweets appear on a Google Maps page. In the future, this life streaming and live streaming of events is only going to become more popular. It allows people from all over the world to have their voices heard in a way never possible before. And big companies are noticing. I wouldn’t be surprised if Twitter was acquired in the next 6 months.
If you want, you can check out my Twitter Stats for the year. Interestingly, the month with the most tweets is June when I bought my first Mac, and the iPhone was released. If you have a twitter account, you can follow me. If I’m not following you, just shoot me an email, and I will. Here’s to another happy year of tweeting. Who knows where Twitter will be a year from now?

Happy Twitterversary! There’s a lot of people celebrating their twitterversaries this month, I’m one of them, on February 20th!
Imagine if we kept tweeting the rest of our lives, it would be like a journal of our lives, I’ve often pondered this thought.

Happy Twitterversary too! March 18th 2007 was my first tweet. I didn’t really start tweeting a lot until december. Its fun. I’ve met a lot of awesome people on Twitter like you.

Happy Twitterversary, Michael! I started a few months late in Twitter — I think I first found out about Twitter and you from Ari, back in the theAmazon days.

I still remember talking to Chad about how awesome Twitter was when I first started tweeting. Good days…
