I don't know Michael, I think you are both right...sorta. The other article expresses that "good writing" is in some ways inappropriate for hard news and that when push comes to shove the quality of writing can be sacrificed for the speed and accuracy of the content. In those regards the other author is probably right. Working in the news industry myself I can vouch for that fact that sometimes we have to do the best with what we have to work with.

On the other hand, good writing is what sets apart one person from the rest. As you mentioned, a good writer is a rare treasure, but I think that brevity is still an issue here. Although I some times enjoy reading lengthy posts, its the creative ability of truly stellar writers to condense information in a light but hearty medium which sets them apart.

So, does great writing online matter? Not really, but those who write well are going to be quite a bit more successful than the others.

Besides, and this is the point in your article which bears repeating, we owe it to our readers to work hard in order to produce content which we are proud of and we should strive to better our writing for the overall benefit of the community in general.

I am thrilled with your comments. As an educator and an author of Children's Literature, it is refreshing to see your ideas on line. Please consider reading my latest book "Good? Grief! " by Cathy Temple Eichelberger. I think you and all of the readers in your life will enjoy it.
