In my opinion concerning confidence and conceit both are negative unless they strive to help others…

In the grand scheme what else really matters?

The difference between confidence and conceit is excess. Conceit is defined as “excessive pride in oneself.” Synonyms are vanity, arrogance, hubris, and smugness. Even though you may think you have the greatest idea ever, be willing to listen to others and at least consider their opinions and ideas.

I agree with everything you said, and I can tell that you will change the world someday!

@Jonathan: Hmm, I should consider how I phrase it then. Because re-reading it, it sounds like I’m saying that I should be better than everyone else. And I by no means mean that.

Instead, I strive try to strive for excellence in everything I do. And there is nothing better than looking back at how much you improve over time. Progress feels great.

I guess my point is this: Do what you do with everything that’s in you and don’t let anyone discourage you.

My own perspective on this is rather than think that you’re the best at what you do, shouldn’t you do your best at what you do? I think you’ll always find someone who you believe does what you do better. It’s the curse of making anything – once the mystery is gone, so is the magic.

Personally, I’ll probably never be completely satisfied with what I do, as what I can dream up is usually better than what I actually produce. However, if I know I’ve done my best in producing it, I can show it off to the world and be happy that this is the best I can do. I think that people notice effort.

Having false confidence in your output, however, is something that drives me away.

I’d add to that: if you don’t believe your idea is amazing, then you shouldn’t even consider the idea. It is the job of other people to find the flaws, it’s your job to be the #1 evangelizer of your idea.

Thanks for that Michael, the confidence/ego thing is something I’ve struggled with lately, and this was a much needed pep talk for me.
