Michael, you've said it perfectly.
I always pertain, you may have a gift, but you've got to unwrap it first and find some batteries.

Just the other day someone made a comment to me about how photography was easy, and that all you need is good camera and a finger.
Clearly they didn't appreciate the time thought and effort that goes into a single photographic expression.
They take snapshots, but I capture the world as I see it.

Keep up the great work!

Ha ha! I agree. True, we can weld the talent by the sweat of our skill.

Great post, completely agree with you. I think determination and motivation can lead to amazing achievements, and are definitely more worthwhile assets than 'natural talent' alone. Of course, talent helps, but is by no means the be all and end all..

Stumbled upon your website via your 'Introduction to Photography', great work! G'day from Sydney, Australia!

I'd add that motivation is key, because without being motivated, no one works hard. I could probably be a great musician, but I could never bring myself to practice and learn, so I'm not going to be.

It's like when people say "Oh, that's such a cool website" and wonder why theirs is not as cool. Well, you put in 3 hours and I put it 15...

I too, completely agree with you on this one! And for me it's the same, I have to work hard to achieve anything. Nothing just comes across — bad but true.

Nice work, great post and much luck on your way learning and working hard!

I can't remember where this is from, but it's a good quote,
"Work beats talent, unless Talent works".

Randy Pausch (sp?) said it best in his "last lecture": ignore the brick walls, they're there to stop other people who don't want it as badly as you.

Completely agree with you here. Some people might be able to pick up certain skills more easily, but even then they rarely achieve anything without working hard and/or smart to make up for the other skills they might lack.

I usually find your words clever, but this post is pure misappropriation as you fail to acknowledge the true source of talent. God.

"Or even all the times I came home from a shoot, only to find that all the shots that looked great on a 3″ screen were really out of focus." That is so me! I hate it when that happens. As to your subject, I believe Talent is something that everyone possesses to varying degrees and can affect how quickly someone is able to pick up on things. Ultimately, though, the work still needs to be put in and that work and dedication is the single biggest key to success. Great post, Michael!

This is a battle that I've been fighting with certain people for years. It always frustrates me how people psyche themselves out by saying "I have no talent for this".

In regards to hard work, I think it's important to mention the feeling of progress. Don't you have an amazing feeling when you look back at the photos you were taking a year or two ago and comparing them with the photos you're taking now? When you can see or hear or experience your progress, it might just be the best feeling in the world!

Thanks for the wonderful and inspiring post, Michael. I agree with you 100%, it's very easy to tell ourselves that "talent" is everything, and that you can't be successful without it. I know way too many people who justify laziness or lack of effort by claiming they don't have talent. I'll probably be referring them to this post sometime soon :)

Keep up the great work!
